So a couple of weeks ago, Kendyll said that he wanted to make krumkake with me because he was going to make them for his foods and nutrition class for an assignment. I promptly forgot about it ,probably assuming that he'd ask me again when we had time, my assumption was totally wrong by the way. About a week later, he asked me for a recipe. I got in my trusty "This and that from Norway" binder and pulled out the first recipe that I came to, asking him if he'd guard it with his life and get a copy at school and promptly bring it back to me? He promised, and off he went to school. Sure enough, he brought the recipe back uninjured and it's safely back in it's proper place in the binder.
Well, a couple of days later it was 7am and he frantically asked me to copy the recipe onto a poster board because as he put it, "your handwriting is better than mine" to which I quickly wrote the recipe onto the poster board. As he was carrying the poster board out of the office, I noticed that the poster board was actually the print of the Boise Temple!!!!!!!! OOPS!!!!! Dang it! No time to re copy the recipe, so sacrificing the print, knowing I could get a new one, (the print was behind my bookcase with the other prints that I wanted to re frame in frames that match the house and the BLANK poster boards, set aside for exactly this kind of project... of course! I pride myself in me supply of emergency school supplies accumulated over the years from too many 10pm requests for glue, colored pencils and poster board, that they need before school tomorrow!) we did what any resourceful mom would do and used double sided tape to stick the temple poster to a fresh poster board. Whew!! Glad that's over..........Kendyll then informed me that he hoped he could make his presentation good enough for an "A" because, he hadn't practiced. It's a good thing that he just has to give his report today.......................NOT!!!! Next he asks me for the KRUMKAKE IRON!!!!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING!!!????? That thing is expensive and HE's never used it........MAYBE he's watched me use it before??????!!!!!!! Are you sure?!! Maybe he's just using it to display as he talks about the cookies and how they're baked.................Right? ..................Wrong!!!! He informs me that he'll be making them for his whole class!! To which I start to freak out and give him TONS of instructions on the right consistency of the batter, the proper way to clean the iron, that batter will ooz out the sides (just wipe it with a paper towel, it'll be messy but fine.) to quickly wrap the cookies around the wooden cones, using kitchen towels over cooling racks, etc. on and on and on I went as Kendyll was walking out the door with my precious iron...........My stomach is in knots and knowing I haven't given him all the advice I needed to, I started texting him with more tips and tricks, .....If your teacher doesn't have cardomom, you can substitute cinnamon.....you might not need to use all of the milk, just add it slowly till it's not too thick or runny.........let the iron cool all of the way before PROPERLY re boxing it........it takes one hour from start to finish for the full batch, will you have enough time?! To which Kendyll and his teenage patience texts back " thanks mom". He's such a good kid. I love him!
Turns out the krumkake turned out great, they looked good, tasted great and were a big success! (My iron is back in the place of honor in the pantry where it belongs. :) ) Maybe this Christmas season, I'll have a cooking class for the other two boys so I won't freak out when they ask me for the privilege of using my prized cooking implements and cherished recipes!!!!
